Frequently Asked Questions
Your Questions About Community Physical Therapy, Answered
  • What makes Community Physical Therapy different from other clinics in the Hanover area?

Community Physical Therapy is a therapist-owned clinic, which means clinical decisions are made by the clinician treating you, not a corporate manager focused on volume. You see the same highly experienced therapist at every single visit, eliminating the hand-off risk common in larger corporate clinics. We also integrate Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy under one roof, so your recovery addresses both the physical mechanics of your injury and your ability to function independently in daily life. This whole-person approach, combined with customized treatment plans built from advanced movement analysis, sets us apart from high-volume rehabilitation facilities on the South Shore.
  • Will I see the same therapist at every appointment?

Yes, absolutely. One of the core commitments at Community Physical Therapy is continuity of care. The same experienced therapist who evaluates you on your first visit is the person who guides you through every subsequent session. This is intentional. When your therapist knows your history, your progress, and your specific goals in detail, they can make precise, informed adjustments to your treatment plan at each visit. You will never need to re-explain your condition to a new face or start over with someone who does not know your case. This consistency is one of the most important factors in achieving faster, more lasting recovery outcomes.
  • What conditions does Community Physical Therapy treat?

We treat a wide range of conditions across Physical and Occupational Therapy. These include back and neck pain, arthritis, chronic pain, TMJ and jaw pain, sports injuries, vertigo and BPPV, vestibular dysfunction, stroke recovery, neurological impairments, joint replacements, fractures, whiplash, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injuries, workplace injuries, and connective tissue disorders. We also provide prehabilitation before surgery and post-operative rehabilitation, as well as dry needling for conditions like tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, and carpal tunnel. If you are unsure whether your condition is something we treat, contact our office to discuss your situation.
  • What is the difference between Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy, and do I need both?

Physical Therapy focuses on restoring movement, strength, and reducing pain at the biomechanical level. Occupational Therapy bridges the gap between physical recovery and your ability to perform daily tasks, such as dressing, cooking, returning to work, or participating in hobbies. At Community Physical Therapy, our PT and OT team collaborates closely to treat the whole person. Whether you need one or both depends on your condition and goals. For example, a patient recovering from a stroke may benefit from PT for gait training and OT for relearning daily living tasks. Your therapist will assess your needs and recommend the right combination of care for your situation.
  • Do you offer services for workers' compensation or auto accident injuries?

Yes. We provide specialized rehabilitation for both workers' compensation claimants and auto accident victims. For workers' comp cases, our services include work conditioning, work hardening, Functional Capacity Evaluations, and return-to-work rehabilitation. For auto accident injuries, we treat conditions such as whiplash, back pain, soft tissue sprains, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injuries using a combination of manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and cognitive rehabilitation. We also address the psychological effects of accident-related trauma, including PTSD and anxiety, through relaxation techniques as part of a comprehensive recovery plan.
  • What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation and who is it for?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation, or FCE, is a structured assessment that measures a person's physical ability to perform work-related tasks. At Community Physical Therapy, we offer two formats: a Modified FCE lasting one to two hours and a Full FCE lasting two to three hours. Both include psychometric testing, musculoskeletal evaluation, aerobic testing, and maximum effort lift testing. FCEs are used for workers' compensation cases, disability claims, and pre-employment screenings. We also provide Fit-for-Duty and post-offer pre-placement screenings for employers who need to assess whether a candidate can safely perform essential job functions under ADA guidelines.
  • What is prehabilitation and why would I need it before surgery?

Prehabilitation, or prehab, is physical therapy performed before a surgical procedure with the goal of strengthening your body and preparing it for the demands of post-operative recovery. Research supports that patients who are stronger and more mobile going into surgery tend to recover faster and with fewer complications afterward. At Community Physical Therapy, prehab programs for joint replacements and other elective surgeries may include strengthening exercises, walker and crutch preparation, and education about what to expect during recovery. Prehab is also valuable for patients exploring whether surgery is necessary, as it positions therapy as a conservative first option.
